Dickinson: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Dickinson

Critics Consensus

Audacious and aspirational, Dickinson's bold blend of period-drama and millennial milieu definitely won't be for all, but those looking to break free from the doldrums of their viewing life may find some kind of hope in its singular vision.

Critic Reviews for Dickinson Season 1

All Critics (52) | Top Critics (21)

It's a wholly unsuccessful and tonally inscrutable piece of work.

Nov 1, 2019 | Full Review…

Dickinson is like The Favourite, retooled either for the YA audience of Gossip Girl, or for literature nerds looking to tune in, turn off, and drop out.

Nov 8, 2019 | Full Review…

Dickinson shows promise in a number of areas -- among them striking visual language, an irresistible playfulness in the music supervision, and a sense of fun, if not humor, that pervades even scenes about mortality or misogyny.

Oct 31, 2019 | Full Review…

Within Dickinson is the still-nascent potential for something beautiful, waiting to burst forth like a morning glory, so long as its promise is cultivated with care.

It will infuriate staunch Dickinsonites, which is precisely what the poet, who often displayed a delicious sense of irony, would have wanted. What liberty a loosened spirit brings.

Oct 28, 2019 | Full Review…

Dickinson" seems ready to whisk viewers to a place they've never been before. But he promise is soon swept away, and "Dickinson" goes back to being just another humdrum teen dramedy suitable for The CW.

Top Critic

A dull, clunky follow-up that doesn't progress the overall plot forward very much, and relies almost solely on an inspired piece of stunt casting to be interesting.

Nov 1, 2019 | Full Review…

You sort of wish that Dickinson had the courage to confront the sadness at its subject's core, or at least the society's perception of her, but it plays more like the SparkNotes version of her life; not particularly incisive, but invaluable nonetheless.

Nov 7, 2019 | Full Review…

Brilliant teen series is destined for immortality.

Nov 4, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

The dark comedy doesn't hide from its subject's tragic end, but makes hay out of it, producing a series that's both wildly funny, and also heartbreaking.

Nov 4, 2019 | Full Review…

Dickinson is certainly the most interesting of Apple TV+'s freshman class. But Hailee Steinfeld's anachronistic bacchanal isn't as clever as it thinks.

Nov 1, 2019 | Full Review…

At least "Dickinson" is trying to be amusing. It just doesn't get off to a very successful start.

What a weird show that I loved so much. Hailee as Emily is unstoppable, I could not get my eyes of my TV. Her chemistry with Ella Hunt is electrifying. Alena Smith has created something so refreshing in this new ear of TV. Killer Soundtrack

Very charming and funny series, its blend of past and present actually works really well and the literary references are top notch.

Moving! Can't wait for more. Love the quality.

Dickinson got entertaining after I watched the first episode or two, which are quite cringe and mostly exist to establish the series. The show got much better after that.

    This show is AMAZING

Definitely a fresh and unusual angle to take on a period show. I don't think I've ever seen a period show use modern dialogue, so at first you have to adjust to that, but when you think about it, it makes sense: more accessible to today's audience and shows how conflicts and love were expressed in the same way as now, they just used language differently. Well acted with Hailee Steinfield delivering the often strange dialogue perfectly. Relationship between Emily Dickinson and Sue Gilbert is explored beautifully, in fact more of it in the later episodes would have been great. It's a show that takes a literary figure like Dickinson and her work and uses it as a basis for a more feminist, humorous, if not unflawed, show.

Good series from Apple. Really like the character dynamics and the social commentary of how the womens are treated in 1800s. Plus it is a right mixture of comedy and drama. A must watch.

This is truly amazing series. A mix of old & new. Hailee Steinfeld gives all she got in this role to make it her own. And of course amazing supportive cast!
