SEASON:

The End of the F***ing World

Critics Consensus

What The End of the F***ing World's second season lacks in urgency it makes up for in character development, diving deep into the darkest creases of the leading pair's memories to emerge a darkly funny meditation on love and trauma.

Critic Reviews for The End of the F***ing World Season 2

The result was bleak but dry, wry and hopelessly romantic, like Badlands relocated to Seventies suburbia. The series is stripped across the schedules for four nights, promising to surprise and beguile as much as the first.

It's an astonishingly nihilistic series, gorgeously made, and for all its macabre humour, very moving.

[Jessica] Barden and [Alex] Lawther excel; their characters perfectly toeing the line between being haunted by their pasts - both are subsequently more awkward and angry around one another - and confused teenage chemistry.

The new episodes share many of the original batch's most effective elements -- strong performances, deft retro soundtrack choices (leaning more on folk this time), a blend of humor and pathos -- without ever finding a reason to exist.

Altogether, it oozes "not for everyone"; although despite that, I think it might be.

Forcing more drama onto them after they've left only feels forced. It's a lose-lose scenario, and while I'll always contend there's a good way to keep telling many stories, this isn't it.

Season 2 brings with it the same shock-value, stunning visuals, and sheer madness, with Alyssa (Jessica Barden) and James (Alex Lawther) back for another round of intense Bonnie and Clyde style drama.

The End of the F***cking World season two proves that a bit of fan service doesn't mean the death of good storytelling.

Darker by necessity, this new season still finds the show's signature humor and heart intact.

Nov 6, 2019 | Rating: 8/10 | Full Review…

While the second season doesn't exactly feel necessary, it's still fun to take another aimless ride with the show's resident weirdos and see where we end up.

The End of the F***ing World costumes help enhance the unease between James and Alyssa, a visual metaphor for how close they could be, and yet how different their respective outlooks are two years on.

Once again, it's a story about the light that slips through the cracks in broken hearts; this time, the light may not be quite as dazzling, but it's absolutely still worth capturing.

While it doesn't have nearly the charm or the wit as the first season, it is fun to follow the exploits and adventures of James and Alyssa again, even if this chapter is much darker than the previous. Though it does seem as if they're setting up a third season which could be quite good.

Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden are perfect as James and Alyssa who are star crossed lovers finding their way back to eachother through hilarious and at times touching moments. A++

this is amazing perfect season my james and alyssa heart exploded ?
  • 15h ago
An epilogue that could have ruined the magic of the first season, but instead expands upon the story. A season that gets better the more you think about it, and a deep look at the nature of trauma and love.

with amazing performances, a fluid script and great hilarious moments the second season of The End of the F World is very satisfying

WOW! Deserves all the awards of Killing Eve and Flea Bag and than some. A dark comedy, the marches to its own beat. Quite a unique experience. The characters are written wonderfully. From the main to the fringe cast - everyone was excellent. And the evolution of both James and Alyssa between season one and two was sublime. The musical score throughout, the timing, perfection. HIGHLY recommend.
