Season 1
Watchmen

Critics Consensus

Bold and bristling, Watchmen isn't always easy viewing, but by adding new layers of cultural context and a host of complex characters it expertly builds on its source material to create an impressive identity of its own.

Critic Reviews for Watchmen Season 1

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (26)

Sunday night on HBO, I saw something I thought I'd never see on television: the depiction of a dark day in American history that not many know about-the Tulsa massacre.

Lindelof's work will either add up to the coolest, most intricate dramatic series this side of Westworld or the biggest swing-and-a-miss in recent television history.

Johnson was craggily charismatic. King was brilliantly fiery. The actions scenes thrilled, the rest intrigued and killing off a major character straight away was a bold way to grab attention. Has Watchmen's hour of screen glory finally arrived?

An energetic, unruly show with a very concise and ambitious objective.

There's the persistent sense of narrative freefall you get when almost anything implausible can happen, and usually does, but Regina King anchors it all with passion and purpose.

Based on the episodes I've seen, it's too early to tell whether Lindelof can make the show's enigmas pay off in a satisfying way, but so far, I'm ready to give him the chance.

This Watchmen is more a fierce blaze than the slow burn that too often exemplifies current prestige television.

Oct 21, 2019 | Full Review…

What's particularly fascinating about the beginning of Watchmen is how it doesn't lean too much into the science-fiction aspect of the world.

Oct 31, 2019 | Full Review…

It's the visionary production details that work so, so well.

It is dark, it is gritty, and it totally throws unexpected twists at you. I can only hope that it continues down the same path.

It seems though that the more characters we meet, the less we can trust any of them all...It is anyone's game.

Oct 30, 2019 | Full Review…

Damon Lindelof's over-plotted, over-anxious, daring, genre-hopping offshoot is less about hunting down the bad guys than the twisted turns and stubborn legacies of racist trauma.

the acting is bad and the stories need better work on them.

Watchman is a must see! Not only does Watchman offer cultural diversity, but it also uncovers a glimpse of the hatred in America and leaves viewers questioning, What if? Combined with a comic book type character feel, loosely based on the original comic, this culturally diverse show is a wake up call to America! United we shall stand as one! What's next?

So far so good, first three episodes were great.

I have to give my 5 cents worth because of its surprisingly low reviews by viewers. If you have given it more time you would know that the season have kept to the spirit and style of the original Watchman to the T. I loved it so far and it gets more intriguing as the old heroes starts popping up.

Not a bad show. But has nothing to do with the original comic and movie except name some of the aesthetics. Using "watchmen" is just a commercial trick in this case and I do not want to support this kind shady tactics.

The characters aren't interesting. The dialogue is mediocre. The pace is erratic and the story lacks subtext. It is essentially just a show about white supremacists with Watchmen characters shoehorned into it.
  • 10h ago
An insult to the movie and the original comic, so bad that even Alan Moore wanted nothing to do with it. That should tell you everything you need to know, if you've read the comics or watched the original.

The lead actress is just a terrible actor! The storyline is okay although there attempt to pull problems of today into the show falls flat. Her white boss that wears a cowboy hat ends up being in the kkk... shocker!!! They could have tried a lil harder there, I guessed it within the first 15 min. But god damn her acting is cringey!!! Like it makes it so hard to watch

    Episode 3 was awesome!
